The Netherlands' Christmas market season runs from mid-November through late December 2026, with highlights including an underground cave market in Valkenburg, a free open-air village on Amsterdam's Museumplein, and a Charles Dickens-themed festival that takes over an entire historic district in Deventer for a weekend. Whether you want something free and central, or a full day out with the family, there is a market suited to it.
For anyone new to the Netherlands, these markets are also one of the easiest ways to experience Dutch winter culture without needing much Dutch at all, most are as much about the food, lights and atmosphere as anything you actually need to buy. Here are five confirmed for 2026, checked directly against each event's own website.
1. Kerstmarkt Gemeentegrot, Valkenburg
Dates: 13 November to 30 December 2026 Hours: Weekdays 11:00 to 19:00, weekends 10:00 to 19:00 (shorter hours on 24 and 30 December, closed 25 December, 10:00 to 18:00 on 26 December) Location: Cauberg 4, Valkenburg aan de Geul Tickets: €9.30 for adults on weekdays, €11.30 on weekends; €6.80 for children aged 5 to 11 on any day; children under 5 go free with a ticket
Billed as the oldest, largest and most visited underground Christmas market in Europe, this market runs through real marl caves beneath Valkenburg. It is a paid, ticketed attraction rather than an open street market, so it works well as a planned day trip rather than a casual stop, and it is wheelchair-accessible, though dogs are not permitted inside.
2. Amsterdam Christmas Village, Museumplein
Dates: 3 to 27 December 2026 Hours: 12:00 to 21:00 from 3 to 24 December, shorter hours from 25 to 27 December Location: Museumplein, Amsterdam Tickets: Free admission throughout
With more than 50 vendors selling food, drinks, gifts and crafts, this is the largest free Christmas market in Amsterdam and the easiest to reach, sitting right on the Museumplein tram stop. It is a good choice if you want to combine a Christmas market visit with a day at the surrounding museums without committing to a ticketed event.
3. Gouda bij Kaarslicht (Gouda by Candlelight)
Date: Friday, 11 December 2026 Time: All-day programme, with the main tree-lighting ceremony at 19:00 Location: Gouda's historic city centre Tickets: Free, all performances included
Now in its 71st edition, this is less a market in the conventional sense and more a city-wide candlelit evening, with Gouda's historic centre lit almost entirely by candles for one night. The day includes a full programme of activities before the evening's main event, a musical ceremony at the Christmas tree, this year featuring singer-songwriter Eva-Nicole Leroux among the confirmed acts.
4. Dickens Festijn, Deventer
Dates: Saturday, 12 December and Sunday, 13 December 2026 Hours: 11:00 to 17:00 both days Location: Bergkwartier district, Deventer Tickets: €6 per person; children 7 and under go free; cash or card accepted at the gate
This is the most theatrical entry on the list rather than a straightforward market. For its 34th edition, more than 950 costumed characters from Charles Dickens' novels, from Scrooge and the Christmas Carol singers to Oliver Twist and Mr. Pickwick, populate Deventer's historic Bergkwartier for one weekend, turning the district into a recreated Victorian London complete with roasted chestnuts, period merchants and street performers.
5. Winter Efteling
Dates: 16 November 2026 to 31 January 2027 Location: Efteling theme park, Kaatsheuvel Tickets: Standard day tickets range from approximately €40 to €56 depending on the visit date, priced separately from the park's regular season tickets
This is the longest-running and most expensive entry here, since it is a full theme park visit rather than a market, but it is worth including for families already planning an Efteling trip. The park's fairytale attractions get a winter and festive theme for the season, with illuminated decorations across areas like Anton Pieck Plein and a dedicated festive gathering area, plus some outdoor roller coasters running weather permitting.
Planning Around the Season
Between Valkenburg opening in mid-November and Winter Efteling running into the following January, the season stretches across more than two months, but the single busiest weekend is 11 to 13 December 2026, when Gouda's candlelit evening and Deventer's full Dickens Festijn weekend both fall within a few days of each other. If you can only pick one paid, ticketed experience, Valkenburg's cave setting and Deventer's costumed theatre offer very different kinds of atmosphere, so the choice comes down to whether you want something visually unusual or something narrative and immersive.
If your business serves the holiday season, whether that is gifts, festive food, event photography or seasonal decor, DesiBiz's directory is a good place to make sure shoppers and visitors can find you as these markets approach.
