There is no single best city for Indian expats in the Netherlands, since Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rotterdam, and The Hague each serve a genuinely different kind of life and career. The right choice depends mostly on your industry, whether you are single or moving with family, and how much you value an established Indian community versus a quieter setting.
Eindhoven: The Tech and Engineering Hub
Eindhoven anchors the Brainport region, one of Europe's leading high-tech innovation hubs, built around a collaboration model between industry, universities, and government. ASML, the global semiconductor equipment leader, is based here, and the region's four universities, including Eindhoven University of Technology, draw a large international student and research population. For Indian professionals in semiconductors, engineering, or IT, Eindhoven often has the clearest concentration of relevant employers of any Dutch city outside Amsterdam.
Amsterdam: International Business and the Largest Community
As the Dutch capital and financial centre, Amsterdam hosts the largest concentration of multinational headquarters, tech companies, and international business roles, along with the country's biggest and most visible Indian and South Asian community. This means more Indian grocery stores, restaurants, and cultural events, but also the highest cost of living and the tightest rental market of the four.
Rotterdam: Ports, Logistics, and More Breathing Room
Rotterdam is home to the largest seaport in Europe, according to the Port of Rotterdam's own figures, and the city's economy leans heavily on logistics, shipping, engineering, and increasingly, a growing business and startup scene. Rent and general cost of living tend to be somewhat more manageable than Amsterdam, and the city has a distinctly different, more modern architectural character since much of it was rebuilt after the Second World War.
The Hague: Government, International Organisations, and Diplomacy
The Hague is the seat of the Dutch government and the King's official residence, and it also hosts major international institutions including the International Court of Justice, making it a genuine hub for legal, diplomatic, and policy careers. It is also where the Embassy of India in the Netherlands is based, which matters in practical terms for anything requiring consular services like passport renewals or attestations.
How to Actually Decide
If your job is tied to a specific employer, that usually settles the question, since commuting across Dutch cities is common but adds real time to your week. If you have flexibility, weigh how much an established Indian community matters to your daily life against your budget and the kind of pace you want, since Amsterdam's energy and Rotterdam's or Eindhoven's relative calm genuinely suit different people.
Wherever you land, the practical side of settling in, finding groceries, community events, and trusted local services, looks different city by city. DesiBiz's directory is organised by region for exactly this reason, so you are not starting that search from zero.
