Term Life Insurance in the Netherlands: What Expats Should Know About the ORV

desibiz.nl Team · Last updated · 4 min read

If you take out a mortgage in the Netherlands, your bank will almost always require you to arrange a term life insurance policy, known locally as an overlijdensrisicoverzekering (ORV), so the outstanding loan gets paid off if you die before the mortgage term ends. For a healthy applicant in their twenties or thirties, decent cover often costs well under 20 euros a month. This guide walks through what an ORV actually covers, what to check before signing up, and what it costs in 2026.

What Is an Overlijdensrisicoverzekering?

An ORV is pure risk life insurance. It pays out a predetermined, tax free lump sum to your chosen beneficiaries if you die during the agreed term, which is typically 15, 20, or 30 years. Unlike a whole life or savings linked policy, it does not build up any cash value. If you outlive the term, the policy simply ends and nothing is paid out. Because it only covers mortality risk and carries no savings component, it stays relatively affordable compared with other types of life cover.

Why Many Expats Take One Out

Beyond the mortgage requirement, an ORV serves two practical purposes for households in the Netherlands:

  • Mortgage protection. If you co-own a home, the sudden loss of one income can make the remaining mortgage payments difficult for the surviving partner. An ORV is structured to pay off part or all of the outstanding balance, so your family is not forced to sell the house.
  • Income replacement. If you have children or a partner who earns less, the payout can help maintain the household's standard of living and cover ongoing costs such as childcare or school fees while things are adjusted to a single income.

Level Cover or Decreasing Cover: What to Check First

When you compare policies, the first choice is usually between two structures:

  • Level cover (gelijkblijvend): the payout amount stays the same for the whole term. This suits people who want to leave a fixed sum for income replacement rather than tie the policy to a mortgage balance.
  • Decreasing cover (lineair or annuitair afbouwend): the payout amount reduces over time, broadly matching how a repayment mortgage balance goes down. It is usually cheaper and is the standard choice for homeowners who only want to cover the remaining mortgage debt.

You will also need to complete a health declaration (gezondheidsverklaring) when applying. Answer it honestly: leaving out a pre-existing condition can put the payout at risk later.

Who in Your Household Should Be Covered

Think about who contributes financial value to the household, not just who earns a salary:

  • Both partners, if both work. Cross-insured policies, where each partner insures the other, mean neither is left without support if something happens.
  • A stay-at-home partner. This is the cover people most often skip, and it is a mistake. If the partner who handles childcare is no longer there, the working partner suddenly faces real costs for professional childcare and household support, so it is worth insuring that partner too.

What Term Life Insurance Costs in the Netherlands in 2026

According to FBTO, one of the larger Dutch insurers, the average monthly premium for an ORV runs between €5 and €35, depending on the insured amount, your age, the term, your health, and whether you smoke. As a rough illustration for a non-smoker insuring €200,000 over 30 years, premium comparison site Wikiverzekering lists examples of around €8 to €14 a month at age 25, rising to roughly €22 to €42 at age 40 and €65 to €120 at age 50, with decreasing cover coming in noticeably cheaper than level cover at every age. Smokers typically pay 80 to 120 percent more than non-smokers for the same cover, close to double in many cases, though most insurers let you apply for non-smoker rates again after being smoke-free for a year or two.

Choosing a Provider

Comparison sites such as Independer let you check quotes from multiple insurers side by side. Established names in the Dutch term life market include a.s.r., Dela, Centraal Beheer, FBTO, and TAF, which underwrites its ORV policies together with BNP Paribas Cardif. Policy terms, medical underwriting questions, and exact pricing vary between insurers, so it is worth comparing at least two or three quotes rather than going with the first one you see.

A quick note before you buy: this article is general information, not personal financial advice. Premiums, terms, and health underwriting rules change, so check the exact policy wording with the insurer, or run your own comparison through a site like Independer, before you commit to a policy.
