Furnishing a home in the Netherlands almost always means at least one trip to IKEA, and often several. The IKEA Family card is completely free to join and is worth signing up for before your first visit, since it unlocks member pricing, a free hot drink in the restaurant, and an unlimited return and exchange window instead of the standard 365 days everyone else gets. Here is what the membership covers and why it suits the way most expats set up a home here.
What the IKEA Family Card Is
IKEA Family is IKEA's free loyalty program, open to everyone and run entirely through the IKEA app or a digital pass in your phone's wallet. It is not a credit card or a paid subscription, just a membership that unlocks better pricing and a few practical extras when you shop in store or online at ikea.nl.
Free Coffee or Tea
Members get a free coffee or tea in the IKEA restaurant, typically on weekdays, which is a small but genuinely useful perk if you are spending an afternoon browsing or just want a warm drink on a grey Dutch day.
A Longer Return Window
Everyone shopping at IKEA in the Netherlands already gets a generous 365 day return and exchange window on unused products in their original packaging. IKEA Family members go a step further, since the membership removes the time limit entirely for returns and exchanges, so there is no deadline to worry about if your plans change. If an item arrives damaged, IKEA's customer service can be reached through your order history to arrange a replacement or refund.
Member Discounts In Store and Online
Look for the yellow IKEA Family price tags in Dutch stores, or log into your account online at ikea.nl, to see discounted pricing on a rotating selection of furniture, storage, and home items. Discounts also apply to a selection of food and snacks in the IKEA restaurant and Swedish food market.
Digital Receipts and Everyday Convenience
Every purchase scanned under your membership is stored digitally in the app, so there is no need to keep paper receipts for returns, warranty claims, or your own budget tracking.
Why It Matters for Setting Up a Home in the Netherlands
Dutch rental apartments are often handed over unfurnished, sometimes without flooring or light fixtures, so a single move can mean a large IKEA order covering several rooms at once. Member pricing on bigger purchases adds up fast, and the unlimited return window is useful if you are furnishing room by room and are not yet sure what will fit. If you do not own a car, many expats transport flat pack furniture by cargo bike, rental van, or public transport, and having a stress free return policy is a good safety net if something gets damaged along the way.
How to Sign Up
Download the IKEA app (set your region to Nederland), register with your email and Dutch address, and save the digital IKEA Family barcode to your phone's wallet. Scan it at checkout, in store or online, so your purchases are tracked and discounts apply automatically.
